About 2,000 endure cold temperatures to vote Sunday

Officials estimate 2,000 voters waited in line at the Montgomery County Board of Elections for as many as two hours to cast ballots Sunday, the last weekend day for early in-person voting before Tuesday’s election.

Some cheered after reaching the end of the line, which started in the county building’s garage and snaked through three floors of the county building.

Today is the last day for early voting for registered voters in Ohio’s 88 counties, including Montgomery, Greene, Warren and Miami.

Montgomery County Board of Elections Director Steve Harsman said 1,500 to 2,000 county residents are expected to vote today.

More than 3,700 people came to the Butler County Board of Elections to place their votes between Friday and Sunday. At 2 p.m. Sunday, a line of more than 100 people wound outside of the board of elections building waiting for the chance to vote. Elections officials in Greene and Warren counties could not be reached for comment.

Despite chilly temperatures, there were long lines of voters in Cincinnati and Columbus as well.

About 30 million people have already voted in 34 states and the District of Columbia, either by mail or in person, according to the Associated Press. No votes will be counted until Tuesday.

As of 5 p.m. Sunday, 80,636 votes were casted in-person and by mail-in absentee ballots in Montgomery County. Harsman said doesn’t not count nearly 2,000 provisional ballots or the 400 to 600 people still lined up to vote Sunday when the doors were shut.

Harsman said the legal dispute over early-voting hours in the state seeming energized residents. He said 5,000 more people voted early this year compared to 2008, the last general election. About 28,000 people voted in person and about 51,000 mailed in ballots. About 2,000 nursing home and military ballots were also casted.

Workers processed as many as 400 voters per hour Sunday and Saturday. Harsman said 2,101 ballots were cast Saturday.

Members of several congregations were encouraged to vote early as part of a push called “All Souls to the Polls.” There was prayer vigil outside of the county building at 3 p.m.

Montgomery County Board of Elections member Rhine McLin on Sunday helped usher people towards the door after they voted. She said things went smoothly.

“We had very few people who choose to to leave,” she said. “We moved them through.”

Some voters took lunches provided by the Obama campaign outside of the county building. Election workers used a number system and provided chairs in waiting area along the line.

Barbara Michaels, 52, of Dayton said she ‘made friends” with others while waiting in the line. She liked the convenience early voting offers.

“I have plans on Tuesday,” she said. “This way I can get it done.”

Data analysis Cherese McBeath of Dayton brought her son Jeremiah Smith to the polls with her Sunday. Jeremiah called this election “boring” and couldn’t wait for his mother to vote so he could go to the mall. McBeath said early voting saved her the need to rush from her job in Miamisburg to vote on Tuesday.

Clayton resident Rebecca Oninku, a nurse, said the long wait was worth it. She voted early four years ago as well and said the wait was about the same.

“I don’t want to worry about trying to get there early in the morning or after work,” she said. “I work 12 hour shifts.”
