Kettering police arrested a man on a robbery charge after he attempted to steal a pack of cigarettes from a convenience store.

Jonathan M. Engle, 25, of Dayton, was arrested by Kettering Police at a Moraine hotel Wednesday morning. Police say he entered Circle K at 1105 W. Dorothy Lane and tried to buy cigarettes, but could not provide proper identification.

He asked the cashier for a bathroom key. When Engle exited the bathroom, police said he attempted to steal a pack of cigarettes.

Police said the cashier struggled with the suspect, who left without the cigarettes, but took the bathroom key - which was attached to a kitchen spatula.

Engle cooperated with the investigation and led detectives to the 1200 block of West Dorothy Lane, where he showed them the bathroom key - still attached to the spatula.

Formal charges are pending.
