SOUTHWEST OHIO —
Lingering snow showers throughout the Miami Valley and southwest Ohio and falling temperatures on Thursday turned area roadways into sheets of ice and contributed to the death of a 53-year-old Preble County man and numerous accidents.
Here’s a quick look at the some of the havoc believed to be related to the weather:
About 8:30 p.m.: A woman driving a small pickup truck had to be extricated from her vehicle after she lost control of the truck that ended up on its side on northbound Interstate 75 at the Austin Boulevard overpass, Miami Twp. police Sgt. Jason Kramer said. The woman was trapped for about 10 minutes. She told her rescuers she was OK and refused a trip to a hospital.
She told police she was driving in the left lane and simply lost control of the truck on the icy road. Kramer said witnesses told police they are were driving at about 30 mph when the accident occurred.
Police shut down northbound 75 at the accident site at least 90 minutes in order to remove the truck and allow for the interstate to be treated.
In the backed-up traffic, a car drove into a ditch, presumably to avoid an accident. The driver of that car wasn’t hurt.
About 8 p.m.: Dayton police and rescue crews were sent to a two-vehicle accident on northbound Interstate 75, just south of the Stanley Avenue exit. The accident left an SUV perched on a guardrail and all three lanes were shut down so the vehicle could be taken off the rail. Those lanes were reopened at about 8:45 p.m. Southbound traffic continued to flow normally.
One person was taken to a hospital. The condition of that person is not immediately known. Police have not commented about the possible cause of the accident, but the highway was snow covered and slick.
About 7 p.m.: A vehicle reportedly crashed and rolled on I-70 in Springfield Twp. after it hit a wall. The accident occurred about two miles west of U.S. 68, in front of the Speedway headquarters.
About 6 p.m.: Gary Miller, 53, of Lewisburg, was killed when he overcorrected his 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer after hitting a slick spot in the 4900 block of U.S. 40 west, said Sgt. Steve Duteil, with the Ohio Highway Patrol post in Dayton. Miller was headed east with his wife about 6:09 p.m. when he lost control of the vehicle, went left of center and off the road before overcorrecting.
The vehicle came to rest on its top in the yard of a home, Duteil said. Miller, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was partially ejected and died at the scene. His wife, also 53, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Reid Hospital in Richmond, Ind.
The roadway was snow covered, there were slick spots, Duteil said, and “according to her, they hit a slick spot. He may have been driving too fast for conditions.”
About 6 p.m.: No one was injured when a driver slammed his car into an historic farmhouse on Dayton Xenia Road. Beavercreek police Sgt. David Darkow said it appeared the driver lost control as he attempted to avoid a collision with oncoming vehicles and hit the vacant structure at 3301 Dayton Xenia Road. Darkow said he believes the driver was not paying attention, but roads made slick because of the snowy conditions may have also played a part.
The driver left the scene and did not receive medical treatment.
Barbara Poston Culberston, who owns the property, said the crash damaged the brace holding up the front porch as well as a corner of the nearly 100-year-old restored house. “I’m hoping it will be repaired soon,” Culbertson said. “It’s an important part of Beavercreek.”
About 4:30 p.m.: A Greenville driver was in serious condition after she apparently lost control of her minivan on State Route 49 north of Horatio-Harris Creek Road, the Darke County Sheriff’s Office said. Heather L. Knowles, 35, was headed north on the snow-covered road when her vehicle hit a utility pole and rolled. It came to rest in a field near the road. Knowles was taken to Miami Valley Hospital via CareFlight. The accident is under investigation.
