PREBLE COUNTY —

Several small chickens died in a garage fire on Verona Road near the village of Verona.

Firefighters responded to the property in the 10000 block of Verona just before 11 p.m. Friday.

Flames were visible when firefighters arrived on the scene and a nearby propane tank was leaking, presenting an added danger for firefighters.

Six departments were called to battle the fire at the detached garage.

The intensity of the flames melted siding on a home that sat about 20 feet away from the garage, firefighters said.

“We managed to save the house,” Verona Fire Captain Rob Rayburg said. “A lot of the siding and stuff burnt on the house, but we did save the structure of the house.”

The family living in the home was able to return to their residence.

The garage was considered a total loss, and a nearby vehicle also sustained damage from the flames, Rayburg said.

A cause of the fire is under investigation and a dollar amount on damage in the fire has not been determined.

Firefighters from Verona, Lewisburg, West Manchester, Brookville, Phillipsburg and Arcanum assisted in the fire fight.
