SHELBY COUNTY —

One person died this morning in a crash on Interstate 75 after a vehicle slid on an icy bridge, crossed the median and collided with a semi-tractor trailer.

Bret Wood, 46, of Toledo, has been identified as the fatal victim in the crash that occurred early this morning on I-75 near Botkins.

Around 3:15 a.m., an Astro Van was traveling northbound on I-75 when the driver, identified as Wood, lost control on an icy bridge, according to Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Rick Albers. The van crossed the median and veered into the southbound lanes, where it was struck by a semi, driven by Dean Harris, of Oshawa, Ontario.

The collision shattered the fuel tank on the semi, spilling approximately 200 gallons of diesel fuel onto the roadway. The semi then jackknifed across the southbound lanes and was struck by a second semi, driven by William Hildebrand, 76, of North Freedom, Wisc.

Hildebrand was taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening. Harris was not injured.

The female passenger of the van, identified as Bernadette Woods, of Toledo, was taken to Lima Memorial Hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

The southbound lanes of I-75 were closed for several hours while crews worked to clean up the crash.

One of the semis was slightly hanging over the same bridge where the minivan driver lost control. The Environmental Protection Agency was called to assist, and crews were working to keep diesel fuel out of the creek bed below the bridge.

Both crashes are still being investigated.
