HARRISON TWP. —

A family of five escaped heavy smoke and flames Thursday night when their house caught fire and briefly left a dog trapped inside.

One adult, an infant and two children under the age of 10 were taken to hospitals for smoke inhalation, Harrison Twp. Fire Chief Mark Lynch said. The other adult did not require a trip to a hospital, the chief said.

Lynch declined to offer much about the extent of the injuries, except that the injuries were “serious enough to go to the hospital to get checked out.”

Crews were at the scene, in the 500 block of Elm Grove Drive, searching for the cause of the fire. Lynch had no early estimate of monetary damage to the structure or its contents, but said it was not a total loss.

Crews were dispatched just before 8 p.m. on a report of a working structure fire, and Lynch said they found “heavy smoke” coming from the structure.

He said he wasn’t sure whether there were smoke detectors in the home, but said the fire is believed to have started in a family room on one side of the house. The family was believed to be on the opposite side of the house when they found the fire, Lynch said.

“There was one dog in the basement and we got that dog out,” he said. The dog was believed to be either a black Labrador or lab-type breed.

The family will be staying with relatives, Lynch said.
