DAYTON —

A man who was injured in a crash during a police pursuit was in critical condition at Miami Valley Hospital on Friday.

Ricky Rutlege Jr., 24, was the passenger in a stolen vehicle that sped away from Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers and crashed into a pole at the intersection of South Upland and Maywood Avenues, troopers said.

He and the driver, Robert A. Brooks, 24, could face multiple charges. A stolen loaded handgun, drugs and a large sum of cash were found in the car, troopers said.

Troopers attempted to perform a traffic stop on the vehicle in the area of Gettysburg Avenue and U.S. 35 around 2:45 a.m. Friday, after a trooper clocked the vehicle going 59 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone.

“Due to the tinted windows on the vehicle the trooper attempting to approach couldn’t see inside the vehicle,” said OSP Sgt. Jeff Kramer. The trooper backed from the vehicle and requested additional assistance from Dayton Police, Kramer said.

Once additional help arrived troopers and police approached the crashed vehicle with weapons drawn.

According to Kramer, both suspects in the vehicle failed to comply with officer commands to exit the vehicle with their hands in the air. Eventually authorities busted out the windows of the car and reportedly saw Rutledge messing with a compartment area, Kramer said.

Brooks and Rutledge were eventually pulled from the vehicle and transported to Miami Valley Hospital. Rutledge was listed in critical condition Friday morning. Brooks did not suffer injuries considered life-threatening, authorities said.
