A Guernsey County grand jury has indicted a retired Dayton police detective on charges of aggravated robbery in the Nov.1 armed holdup of a Cambridge bank.

David M. Hirst, 49, of Dayton also faces kidnapping, grand theft and inducing panic felony charges, according to the indictment released Tuesday. Hirst, who retired in November 2011 after 25 years with the Dayton department, could face more than 10 years in prison if convicted on all charges.

According to Cambridge police, Hirst entered the U.S. Bank, adjacent to the county courthouse, around 12:45 p.m. Nov. 1. He handed a teller a note demanding cash, took the teller into the vault, then fled out the back door with $60,000 in cash, according to county Prosecutor Daniel Padden.

Hirst was confronted in the parking lot by a Cambridge officer. Hirst — armed with loaded .40-caliber Glock and .380-caliber Ruger handguns — was taken into custody without incident.

Several downtown blocks were evacuated after Hirst told officers he had an explosive device. The device later was determined to be a fake.

He faces arraignment Dec. 27.
