UNION CITY, Ind. —

A Union City man is accused of branding three children with a hot medallion because the kids said they wanted tattoos.

According to Randolph County court documents, Jason Mangas was watching his four children the weekend of Jan. 18-20 when he allegedly burned his daughter, his son and the son’s friend on their upper arms.

The girl, 8, told her father that she wanted a tattoo, according to an affidavit for probable cause in the case.

Mangas, 28, reportedly heated a necklace on a space heater until it was hot, then placed the medallion of the necklace on the girl’s arm. He then helped her brother and his friend do the same thing on their bodies, according to the affidavit.

The girl’s mother saw the burn when the children returned home on Jan. 20 and called sheriff’s deputies.

Mangas is charged with three counts of neglect of a dependent, a Class D felony.

A fourth child may also have been branded according to the affidavit, but Mangas is only charged with three counts of neglect.

Mangas appeared in Randolph County Circuit Court Thursday and waived the initial reading of his charges. A trial has been scheduled for June 3.

It was his second time appearing in front of Judge Jay Toney this week.

On Wednesday, Mangas pleaded guilty to theft and residential entry related to a 2010 break-in. He was sentenced to home detention and probation.
