A 52-year-old Greenville man accused of being at the center of several door-to-door scams remains in the Darke County Jail a charge of theft from an elderly person.

Randy Hofacker, of 416 E. 3rd St., was arrested Feb. 22 and is in jail on a $2,500 bond, sheriff’s Cpl. Tim Nichols said Monday afternoon.

The department had received multiple reports during the past several weeks in which a suspect approached the victim’s residence asking for money to make repairs to the victim’s house and car, or to help the victim cash a check.

According to the Ohio Revised Code, an elderly person is defined as someone who is 65 years of age or older.

Police are urging citizens not to loan money to people asking to borrow money if they don’t personally know the person.

The police department instructs you to call police at (937) 548-1103 if you believe you have been a victim of a similar scam, or if a stranger comes to your home or approaches you and asks for a loan or to borrow money.
