Local man charged with rape of girl, 11

By Mark McGregor

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio —

A Springfield man pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a single count of rape in connection with an investigation involving an 11-year-old girl.

According to Springfield police, Anthony M. Springer, 20, of 711 Broadway St., was sexually involved with the girl at least once between September and December at a home in the 1600 block of Karr Street.

He denied the charges earlier this month but submitted to a polygraph examination on Tuesday, during which officials said he provided details about the incident and admitted sexual conduct between himself and the child, according to a police report.

He was arrested and placed in Clark County Jail on the felony charge, where he remained Wednesday afternoon, Springfield Police Lt. Noel Lopez told the Springfield News-Sun.

The report also indicates three other males may have been involved. When asked about the other males, Lopez said detectives were following additional avenues in the investigation but declined further comment.

Officers launched the investigation when they were called Dec. 12 to Springfield Regional Medical Center on the report of the victim being treated for a possible sexual assault.

Lopez said he didn’t know if Springer had any history with law enforcement, but Clark County court records indicate no charges had ever been filed against him.

Victim and witness accounts as well as evidence linked Springer to the rape, Lopez said.
