A 27-year-old Dayton man has been convicted of killing his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son, the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office announced late Wednesday.

Joe Curtis Watson IV was found guilty of murder in the death of Levi Barrett and also convicted on three counts of child endangering, Prosecutor Mathias H. Heck Jr. said.

Watson arrived with the boy at Good Samaritan Hospital on Dec. 8. The boy was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Levi had numerous scars and extensive bruising over his body, and hospital personnel called Dayton police. Watson and Levi’s mother, Michelle D. Mooty, were arrested that same day.

Mooty, 23, is under indictment on charges of permitting child abuse, complicity to commit felonious assault and child endangering. Her case is set for trial on Dec. 17.

Levi’s autopsy revealed that he suffered deep contusions and bruising to internal organs. The coroner’s office ruled his death a homicide from blunt force trauma.

Watson faces a sentence of 15 years to life on the murder plus concurrent sentences on the child endangering counts. He is set to be sentenced Dec. 11.

“This little boy, as helpless as any 2 year old child would be, suffered abuse and torture from this defendant,” Heck said. “The defendant now faces life in the penitentiary. We plan to hold the victim’s mother accountable for her actions as well, for permitting this abuse.”
