DAYTON —

Police discovered a basement marijuana grow operation while searching a home on Huffman Avenue Monday.

After receiving a tip about heroin sales, Dayton narcotics officers obtained a search warrant for 1815 Huffman Avenue.

When the search warrant was served Monday night they found heroin and marijuana plants in the basement of home and arrested the homeowner, according to a Dayton Police report.

Timothy Butts, 25, was booked into the Montgomery County Jail pending charges of illegal cultivation of marijuana and possession of drugs.

When asked about the drugs, Butts said he was about to stop selling heroin, according to the report. He told police that he doesn’t smoke or sell marijuana, but just “grows it as a hobby.”

Butts, his girlfriend and a baby were in the house when police entered on Monday. According to property records he owns the house and he told police that he lives there with his girlfriend and four children.

Police recovered 11 grams of heroin, cutting agent and other drug paraphernalia from the basement of the home along with more than $2,000 in cash and 130 marijuana plants.

According to the report, the house was set up for drug manufacturing and sales, with a security camera watching the front door, a press and mixers for preparing heroin for sale, and the grow operation including lights, timers and books on indoor cultivation.

Butts and his girlfriend were nuisance abated from the house.
