A convicted sex offender is accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend and another man while her 10-year-old son hid upstairs.

The double homicide took place at the Catalpa Crossing Apartment Complex on Turner Road early Thursday morning.

According to accounts from neighbors and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, 34-year-old Harvey Lee Jones may have argued with Carly Hughley, 32, and Demetrius Beckwith, 29, before shooting them inside Hughley’s apartment at about 1 a.m.

Jones’ motive is currently unknown, but Sheriff Phil Plummer said he and Hughley had a previous relationship and he moved out of the Turner Road apartment recently. Neighbors reported hearing arguing before the shooting and said that Hughley was afraid of Jones.

It is unknown how Beckwith was associated with them.

Hughley’s son was able to escape the apartment and called 911 from a neighbor’s residence. He was able to identify Jones by name and describe the vehicle that he drives.

“He witnessed his mother being shot,” Plummer said. “I don’t think the suspect saw him. Who knows what would have happened.”

At about 6 a.m. police found Jones and his vehicle at an address on Homewood Drive in Dayton where he’s reportedly been staying.

Beckwith was pronounced dead at the scene. Hughley was transported to Miami Valley Hospital where she later died.

Jones is being held at the Montgomery County Jail pending formal charges of aggravated murder and a parole violation. Plummer said charges will be presented to prosecutors Friday.

Jones is a registered sexually oriented offender, according to Attorney General’s records. He was charged with rape, aggravated burglary, abduction and felonious assault in connection with a 2002 incident in Dayton but was convicted of a lesser offense of attempted rape and aggravated burglary.

He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and is required to register his address once per year until 2022. He was released from prison in March of 2012.

“He has an extensive criminal history,” Plummer said.

Family members confirmed Thursday that the boy lost his father in a motorcycle accident in 2004. His uncle, David Uloho said it’s hard to think about what the boy went through.

“I can’t even imagine,” he said. “He’s 10.”

Uloho said the boy has lots of family members willing to care for him.
