Police: Driver crashed down embankment after using drugs

DAYTON —

A man is facing a possible misdemeanor drug charge after he drove his car off of US 35 Monday afternoon.

The 54-year-old driver was reportedly bloody and confused when police found him in a grassy lot near the intersection of S. Paul Laurence Dunbar Street and Germantown Pike about 4 p.m.

James Brooks told police he hit a pothole while traveling eastbound on US 35, sending him careening down an embankment, through a fence and then into the field.

When police spotted his car, he was traveling 45 mph in the field while smoke escaped from his damaged vehicle. The air bags had been deployed, according to a police report.

Brooks later admitted to using heroin prior to the crash after officers found two syringes in his car, according to the report.

He was issued a summons to appear in court on a misdemeanor charge of possessing drug abuse instruments.
