VANDALIA —

An altercation on West National Road Tuesday evening that was reported as a case of road rage ended with one arrest and one person being hospitalized.

A woman who was struck by a truck and trapped, clinging to the truck bed for several miles was treated for injuries at a local hospital while the driver of that truck is facing charges of felonious assault and abduction.

According to a Montgomery County Sheriff’s report, the incident began in Harrison Township when a mother and daughter spotted the truck in the parking lot of Hoagie’s Pizza House, 6128 N. Dixie Drive.

The women believed the driver to be someone who had been harassing them and got out to confront the man, according to the report.

The driver, 24-year-old Jared Belcher, denied the allegations and told the women to move away from his car, but they refused.

Police said that’s when he backed his truck into the mother, causing her to fall into his truck bed. He then took off with her hanging on, according to the report.

The victim’s daughter and her brother got into another car and chased after the truck. When Belcher stopped at a light in the 700 block of West National Road they jumped out and got into his car to make him stop, according to the report.

The brother told police that he kicked out the back window of the truck, pulled Belcher from the driver’s seat, punched him and held him until police arrived.

The mother, 43, was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the back of the truck.

Belcher was arrested and is being held in the Montgomery County Jail in lieu of $2,500 bond. He is facing possible misdemeanor drug charges as well because police found Xanax pills and a marijuana pipe in his possession upon arrest.

Belcher’s version of events, according to the police report, are that he drove away because the brother pulled a gun on him in the Hoagie’s parking lot. He said the brother and sister then attacked him on National Road and threw rocks at his car.

Neither of those individuals was arrested.
