Teen driver indicted for wrong-way crash that killed woman

DAYTON —

A teen-age girl from Laura has been indicted for aggravated vehicular homicide from an Aug. 11, 2012 car crash that killed a Missouri woman.

The Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office said Rachel Schidecker, 19, drove north on the wrong side of Interstate 75 for four miles before her Ford Explorer crashed head-on into a Chevrolet Blazer near mile post 57 around midnight.

The impact pushed the Blazer into a tractor-trailer and that collision and subsequent fire killed Chereece Rule, 39, of Kansas City, Mo. and injured David Wilson, who suffered serious burns and broken bones and was pulled out of the wreckage by passers-by. Five vehicles were involved in the crash.

Investigators determined Schidecker’s blood-alcohol content was .236, more than 10 times the legal limit of .02 for a person younger than 21. The adult BAC is .08.

“Sadly, here is another example of the deadly consequences of mixing alcohol and driving,” Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr. said in a press release. “In this case, a teen, who should not have been drinking in the first place, caused the death of another because she made the reckless decision to get behind the wheel while she was intoxicated.”

Schidecker was indicted by a grand jury for two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, one count of aggravated vehicular assault, one count of vehicular assault and two counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. A warrant to arrest has been issued for Schidecker, who is scheduled to be arraigned April 2.

Prosecutors theorize that Schidecker, after a night out drinking, entered I-75 at First Street by going up an exit ramp north into southbound lanes, resulting in many 911 calls from motorists.

Wilson said Rule was his friend. She was a social worker, a mother of two children and had two grandchildren. The friends were in town to help Rule’s son move to Central State University. They were on their way to a night club when the accident happened, Wilson told the Dayton Daily News last year. “(Chereece) was like, ‘This lady is about to hit us!’ ” Wilson said.

Schidecker was transported to Miami Valley Hospital to be treated for injuries to her face and head.

When an Ohio State Trooper asked her how the crash occurred, Schidecker replied, “I don’t know anything,” according to the crash report. She also told the trooper that she had been at a friend’s home prior to the accident. When asked if she consumed alcohol, she said, “I don’t remember anything after that.”
