Three teens are facing criminal and disciplinary charges and a teacher has been placed on leave following an assault at E.J. Brown school this week that was captured on video and posted on Facebook.

Shirley Martin received a call from a relative on Tuesday evening saying there was a video of her son being assaulted on the social media site.

She said the original video, which has been removed from the site, was one and a half minutes long and shows her son being punched by another boy in his science class.

“I was kind of astonished like, ‘that’s my child!’” she said. “He didn’t tell me anything.”

Martin made a copy of the video and showed it to police who questioned the boys involved at the school, 31 Willowwood Drive, on Wednesday.

Two of the boys, age 14, were taken into custody pending a misdemeanor charge of assault. The third boy, 13, was also taken into juvenile custody, but he is facing charges of inciting violence and disorderly conduct. He admitted to police that he shot the video and posted it to Facebook that night, according to a Dayton Police incident report.

The Dayton Daily News does not identify juvenile crime suspects.

The report states that the two boys hit the victim, 14, although only one could be seen doing so in the video. The 13-year-old can reportedly been heard saying, “Go, go, go,” while other students laugh. At least one student is heard telling the boys to stop. One of the accused students asks the boy with the cell phone, “Did you record that?”

The assault allegedly took place in a classroom where a teacher was present. Dayton Public Schools spokeswoman Jill Moberley said an investigation has begun into the incident and that teacher has been placed on paid administrative leave for the duration.

She said one of the students involved has been suspended with recommendation for expulsion. “There will be other students who will be going through due process as the investigation is ongoing,” Moberley said.

Martin said her son, who has developmental disabilities, usually loves going to school, but stayed home on Thursday out of fear of retaliation. She said she was shocked to see something like this on Facebook.

“I watch videos on Facebook just like anybody else and I get a kick out of them, but it’s different when it’s your child,” she said.
