VANDALIA —

The Hazardous Material Response Team responded to Waller Avenue in Vandalia Thursday afternoon after a homeowner dumped chemicals down his drain that led to a sulfuric acid cloud.

The homeowner told News Center 7 he dumped the chemicals down the drain in an attempt to fix a drain problem. It started smelling, so he called a plumber. The plumber them called the fire department when he realized there was a problem.

The house is taped off, and hazmat crews worked to remove the chemicals.

The homeowners were expected to be able to go back into their home by 3 p.m.
