Driver, 59, dies in fiery crash in Jackson Twp.

By Breaking News Staff

JACKSON TWP. —

A 59-year-old West Alexandria man died Wednesday morning in a fiery crash that may have been caused when he suffered a medical emergency.

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office is trying to determine if the driver, Kerry Monbeck, died as a result of a medical emergency or the fire that erupted around his vehicle after the crash.

An autopsy has been performed, a coroner’s investigator said Wednesday night, but no preliminary cause of death has been determined because there are a number of things that need to be looked at in terms of toxicology and other tests.

Jackson Twp. Police Chief Jon Schade said the crash was reported at 9:30 p.m. as a single vehicle in a field on Havermale Road, east of Johnsville Road.

Schade said the car went about 540 feet off the road and into a field. The vehicle caught fire there. Schade said it appears the driver’s foot remained on the accelerator, spinning the vehicle’s wheels and heating the exhaust, which ignited the grass.

Schade said investigators believe a medical emergency may have precluded the vehicle going off the road because there was no evidence of braking or skid marks.
