EATON —
Public urination, drug and alcohol use, curfew violations and lack of supervision are among reasons the planning officials here opted to close Preble County’s only shelter for the homeless.
Closure of the facility, 131 N. Beech St., is set for next month following the vote by the Eaton Planning Board.
Police have responded to the facility 26 times since July 2011, including six visits this year, with a third of those calls resulting in an arrest, according to city records.
Neighbor Snoba Rimer lives across the street from the unmarked brick home.
“I guess it’s nice if it’s done for a good reason, but evidently things didn’t go right,” Rimer told News Center 7 Thursday night.
The building is owned by Greater Dayton Area’s Community Action Partnership, which serves a six-county region.
John Bennett of CAP said he is concerned about what will happen to the 10 to 15 people who stay there each night. He said 90 children stayed at the shelter in 2012.
“Part of our program is that we work with (the tenants) to try to help them modify their behaviors and improve their job skills,” Bennett said. “We’re not quite sure at this point what our next move will be.”
