Family dog, smoke detectors wake family

PREBLE COUNTY —

A family dog and smoke detectors alerted two people to a fire at their home on Pleasant Valley Road early Wednesday morning, firefighters said.

Firefighters said the occupants avoided injury and ran to a neighbor’s home to call 911 after the flames overtook the house around 3:40 a.m. A burning log from a fireplace is believed to have sparked the blaze when it fell out from the fireplace, according to firefighters.

The home was destroyed by the flames and is considered a total loss, fire officials said. The West Elkton Fire Department was the first fire crew to arrive on the scene, and the fire was already shooting through the roof. Witnesses said the flames could be seen from two miles away.

Firefighters from around seven departments responded to assist with the fire battle.

No injuries were reported from the fire.
