Huber Heights —
Two men who may have started a fire were transported to Miami Valley Hospital with smoke inhalation and burns on their hands from a house fire at 7753 Shalamar Drive.
Huber Heights fire crews arrived on the scene around 6:10 p.m. Saturday.
“When they got there they had extensive fire going throughout the house”, said Chief Mark Ashworth. “Mainly it got out of the bedroom and got into the attic and was running the attic.”
He said the fire quickly ran the length of the roof due to the wind gusts fanning the flames. The home was a single story wood structure.
Ashworth said the knock-down happened “pretty quick” and firefighters had a handle on it within five to seven minutes.
Ashworth said the fire may have been started deliberately.
“Yeah, at this time we are treating it as suspicious. With the cooperation of the detectives and the evidence technicians from the police department.”
Ashworth said that police were called earlier Saturday for a domestic disturbance at the same house.
“Sometimes these investigations we can get resolved relatively quick. Sometimes it takes several days” he said. “Just with any fire that’s considered suspicious we take our time and it’s just a painstakingly slow process.”
He added that the police department is interviewing two “persons of interest.” Ashworth said those two were the only ones injured in the fire.
Ashworth said Huber Heights received mutual aid from Dayton, Riverside, and Vandalia.
