Kettering police officer honored for saving life

KETTERING —

Kettering police honored one of their own Tuesday in recognition of his actions that prevented a man from killing himself.

Officer Larry Tobias received a Distinguished Service Award for his actions on Sept. 10, when he responded to a residence where a man was threatening to kill himself, according to the police department.

Police said other officers were still en route when Tobias noticed the man exit the house holding a steak knife to his throat. Police said the man’s hands and throat were bleeding.

After the man ignored commands to drop the weapon, Tobias deployed a Taser and subdued him. The male was taken to Kettering Medical Center.

The police department statement reads: “The quick and decisive actions taken by Officer Tobias saved the subject from hurting himself further. The Distinguished Service Award is granted to officers who act without concern for their own well being by defusing serious situations. Officer Tobias maintained professionalism during a time of crisis involving significant risk of life or injury to him and the distraught subject.”
