Voting information to hit mailboxes soon in Montgomery County

By Jeremy P. Kelley

DAYTON —

Most registered voters in Montgomery County will receive a postcard in the mail between today and Tuesday, explaining a half-dozen important voting facts, many of which have changed since the last presidential election in 2008.

Steve Harsman, deputy director of the Montgomery County Board of Elections, said because of redrawn political maps, many residents will be voting in new districts for the Ohio House, Ohio Senate and U.S. House of Representatives for the first time on Nov. 6. The card will list the appropriate district in each case.

Areas that will vote on new state representatives because of the redrawn maps include Centerville, Miamisburg, West Carrollton and parts of Kettering and Miami Twp. Parts of Dayton, Huber Heights and Riverside will be voting in new districts for all three bodies — Ohio House, Ohio Senate and U.S. House of Representatives.

The postcard will confirm that the recipient is registered to vote and will list their polling location. Harsman said the county consolidated hundreds of voting precincts in 2009, so those who have not voted since the last presidential election may be voting at a new location.

The card also will list hours for in-person absentee voting (commonly called early voting) at board of elections offices, although those hours could change based on lawsuits that are pending before multiple Ohio courts.

Currently, early voting begins at 8 a.m. this Tuesday, Oct. 2, and continues on the hours spelled out on the card until 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2. A federal judge recently reinstated voting on Nov. 3-5, but that decision is being appealed by state officials.

The card also explains how to vote absentee by mail.

“We are definitely promoting the use of the absentee applications that the Secretary of State sent, to potentially avoid any long lines (on Election Day),” Harsman said.

Harsman encouraged people who do not receive the postcard to promptly check their registration at www.mcboe.org, or call (937) 225-5656. The deadline to register to vote is 9 p.m. Oct. 9.

Voters in several other local counties — including Greene, Warren, Preble and Darke — can check their registration, polling location and voting districts on their county’s Board of Election’s website, by clicking the “Am I Registered” or “Voter Lookup” link.
