Air Force Reserve acquisition intelligence unit coming to WPAFB

By Barrie Barber

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE —

A new Air Force Reserve acquisition intelligence unit with about 50 members will start operations at Wright-Patterson within a year.

The unit marks the second reserve intelligence unit at the base in less than a year, marking a growing priority for aerospace-related intelligence in Air Force Reserve ranks.

The 14th Intelligence Squadron will conduct intelligence analysis and assessments for the Air Force Materiel Command headquartered at Wright-Patterson, according to Chandra Brown, an Air Force Reserve spokeswoman at Robins Air Force Base, Ga.

The squadron will support the 21st Intelligence Squadron, a 55-member active-duty unit assigned to the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, and work in collaboration with the National Air and Space Intelligence Center, according to Air Force officials. All of the organizations are headquartered at Wright-Patterson.

The new reserve unit will take at least a year to become operational. “The overall timeline will depend on the recruiting and training of new members to accomplish the mission,” Brown said in an email.

The 14th Intelligence Squadron is the second reserve unit created at the base under an Air Force Reserve restructuring plan.

The restructuring included the launch of the 655th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Group, a group of 60 reservists and civilians who support NASIC. The center specializes in identifying foreign air, space and cyberspace threats and provides intelligence findings and assessments to high-level political and military leaders.
