FAIRBORN —
Funeral services are set for a Fairborn defense contractor who died this month at a U.S. military hospital in Germany from wounds suffered in a shooting in Afghanistan, officials said.
The services for Christina S. Maddock are scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday at Victory Temple, 2443 Valle Greene Drive in Fairborn, officials said.
Visitation hours are set from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Belton-Stroup Funeral Home, 422 E. Dayton-Yellow Springs Road, also in Fairborn.
Lt. Col. Elaine Henderson, the 178th Fighter Wing chaplain at the Springfield Air National Guard base, is expected to deliver the eulogy. Maddock was a former member of the unit. She also was a second lieutenant in the Ohio Air National Guard’s 123rd Air Control Squadron in Blue Ash, near Cincinnati. She was 27 years old.
Rev. Tim Walden, pastor of Victory Temple, said he expects hundreds of people to attend the service for the 2003 Fairborn High School and 2009 Wright State University alumna.
“I could just tell that she was well-liked by everybody and she was kind and was a giving person,” he said. “I’d say we’ll be close to packed.”
Maddock died after she was injured in a non-combat related shooting Feb. 13 at Camp Arena in Herat, Afghanistan, authorities have said. Military authorities do not consider her death a suicide. She was a field support representative with Colorado Springs, Colo.-based Intelligent Software Solutions on a one-year deployment to Afghanistan which began in mid-January.
The Army Criminal Investigation Command continues to investigate the incident but has not released additional details. “We want to make sure with certainty what transpired before we release any more information,” Army spokesman Chris Grey said Tuesday. The Afghanistan Foundation, a non-profit and non-governmental research organization on public policy in Afghanistan, has called for a full investigation into the incident.
The Rotary Club of Fairborn has started a fund-raising drive to aid Maddock’s family to help defray funeral expenses, said Stephen A. Brown, a Rotary Club member. Local businesses have offered hotel rooms without charge to the family to flowers, he said.
Those efforts join with Delta Tau Delta, a Wright State University fraternity, which had raised more than $6,000 as of Tuesday, said Kameron T. Smith, 23, a fraternity member and WSU student.
“It’s come to us from multiple different places and people throughout the United States,” he said.
Maddock’s brother, James “Jimmy” Maddock, is the president-elect of the fraternity.
The family has asked in lieu of flowers for donations to be made to the Christina Maddock Memorial Fund at any Fifth Third Bank location, according to an obituary. Internment with military honors is set for March 5 in Florida.
