DARKE COUNTY, Ohio —
Police and sheriff’s deputies are trying to figure out why a 62-year-old Greenville man drove a pickup truck off Ohio 118 and into a metal road side sign near the northern village limits on Tuesday.
Robert Christman was taken to Miami Valley Hospital by CareFlight from the accident, Ansonia police Chief Frank Shapiro said.
Police and fire/rescue crews from Ansonia and Greenville were dispatched at about 2:43 p.m. to the 10,000 block of Ohio 118, just north of Beeler Cemetery, on a report of a single-vehicle crash, Shapiro said.
The small 1996 Chevy S-10 was headed south when it veered off the right side of the road and continued about 200 feet before it struck the sign. The truck became wedged under it and Christman had to be extricated, he said.
Christman was alert and talking when he was taken to the hospital, Shapiro said, but there was no immediate word on his condition.
Rescue crews think the truck belongs to his employer.
Christman told rescuers he didn’t remember anything about the accident, Shapiro said.
The Darke County Sheriff’s Office is continuing the investigation.
