HARMONY TWP., Clark County —
A 4-year-old boy was revived through CPR after almost drowning in a swimming pool at Beaver Valley Campground in Harmony Twp. on Friday afternoon.
The boy was told by his mother to remain in a chair on the side of the pool while she and another adult swam with older children, according to the Clark County Sheriff's Office. The mother then looked up to see that her son was missing from the chair.
As she continued to look for her child, a passer-by noticed the child at the bottom of the pool near the 5-foot section at about 1:26 p.m. before jumping in and pulling the boy out, according to the sheriff's office.
"He jumped in, laid him on the concrete and started CPR," said April Bucevicius of Mechanicsburg. She and Tipp City resident Gaylyn Richardson then stepped in to continue CPR, along with the child's mother. The passer-by was not identified, according to the sheriff's office.
"I heard the mom screaming so I followed her and went over to where the other lady was doing CPR. She couldn't do it anymore and asked me to take over," said Richardson, who, like Bucevicius, was a camper at the facility.
The boy then began breathing before vomiting and crying, according to Richardson.
The pool was indoors where participants are instructed that they swim at their own risk without the supervision of a lifeguard.
The child was taken to Springfield Regional Hospital, and later transfered to Dayton Children's Medical Center. He was crying and alert when Harmony Twp. medics took him from the campground. His condition was not available.
"It's just like tubing down the river or any watercraft sports or swimming in general," said sheriff's Lt. Dustin White. "You have to be cognizant and be safe."
