URBANA —

Students were evacuated from Urbana Local Intermediate school late Friday morning after a bomb threat was found written on a boys bathroom wall.

The school building, 2468 Ohio 54, was placed on lockdown shortly after 11 a.m. after the threat was found, said Champaign County Sheriff Matt Melvin.

Charges are pending against a 12-year-old student who admitted to writing the message, and who later said it was a hoax. The student could face charges of inducing panic and disrupting public services. He was released to a guardian.

Students at the school were transported to the nearby Urbana Twp. building while the threat was investigated, Melvin said. They were later released at Urbana Junior High School.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office provided a dog to search the building, but nothing was found.

This is the second time this month an Urbana City Schools Building was placed on lockdown.

Earlier this month, officers from the Urbana Police Division investigated an incident in which an 18-year-old high school student was taken into custody after admitting to writing a threatening message on the stall of a bathroom door of the high school. In that case, officers were already at the school for an unrelated matter, and locked down the building after a student asked officers if they were there because of the threat.
