New numbers out this month from the Centers of Disease Control show estimates indicating there are about 20 million new infections in the U.S. each year.
The impact to the U.S. healthcare system is nearly $16 billion in direct medical costs, according to a release from the CDC.
Estimates show half of all new sexually transmitted infections in the country occur amoung young men and women. Data suggests there are more than 100 million total STIs among men and woman across the nation.
The two most recent analyses include the eight most comming STIs: Chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B virus (HBV), herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), human papillomavirus (HPV), syphilis and trichomoniasis, the release said.
The CDC also said gay and bisexual men face a higher risk of contracting syphilis as infection numbers a rising at a quick rate. Younger mena nd women are more at risk for gonnorrhea and chlamydia, data shows.

Chlamydia: 1,412,791
Gonorrhea: 321,849
Syphiis (primary and secondary): 13,970
Syphilis (congenital): 360
