NEW CARLISLE —
A New Carlisle woman arrested on Friday has reportedly admitted to a long history of reporting erroneous crimes, one of which resulted in the lockdown of New Carlisle Elementary school.
Angela Butler, 44, on Friday was booked into the Clark County Jail on suspicion of three counts of making false alarms and inducing panic, all misdemeanors.
That morning, the sheriff’s office received a 911 call reporting a Rite Aid in Park Layne that had been robbed. Deputies soon found there was no substance to the report — no robbery had occurred.
The call was traced back to Butler’s phone and deputies apprehended her on West Lake Avenue in New Carlisle. Deputies said Butler was a suspect in “at least” nine other incidents of calling 911 from a cell phone and making false claims.
“These phone calls started Oct. 23 of last year,” said Detective Ethan Cox. “And they’ve been coming in ever since.”
Reports ranged from robberies to shootings to fires, according to deputies. Because one crime was reported in the vicinity of New Carlisle Elementary, the school was locked down.
“It didn’t come back to a specific cell phone holder, but we were able to find it with GPS,” he said of the phone.
In other words, authorities could not simply contact a carrier.
“We tried subpoenas to find out who the phone was assigned to,” Cox said.
Butler has admitted to being behind the calls. According to deputies, she said she when she is “off her meds,” she “does crazy things.”
“It’s a huge drain on resources to respond to a shooting call or a robbery in progress,” Cox said. “I’m sure you can appreciate that.”
Butler was apologetic Friday when asked about her arrest. She said she suffers from a number of disorders, including Bipolar disorder.
“I’m totally sorry,” she said. “From the bottom of my heart. I’m an idiot. I need to get back on my pills and get my head straight.”
She also said she’s ready to accept her punishment.
“I’m going to take care of it and pay for it and get back out on the streets and be a productive member of society like I’m supposed to,” she said.
Deputies say she’ll be arraigned on Monday.
