Flying this Thanksgiving? Check your gravy

By Amelia Robinson

Staff Writer

AAA estimates nearly 3.14 million Americans will take to the sky for Thanksgiving.

Chances are some of those folks will want to bring along gravy, cranberry sauce and scotch.

The Transportation Security Administration says holiday food can be brought on the plane, so you have no excuse to not bring a dish to grandma’s.

There are, of course, rules.

TSA officers may likely give carried on solid food — turkeys, turducken, tofurkey etc. — more than a simple once over. As TSA points out, that inspection should not include a taste test. In other words, TSA agents shouldn’t be slicing up your pecan pie or taking a bite out of your chocolate cake.

Check or ship liquid and darn-near liquid foods, including cranberry sauce, creamy dips and spreads, sauces, salsa, jams, salad dressings, gravy, jams, jellies, maple syrup, oils, vinegars, sauces, soups, liquor, beer and wine.

It is likely you’ll be glad you brought that scotch.

Here are a four other tips from the TSA:

Say ‘no’ to snow globes: They might be purty, but the TSA treats them as any other container filled with liquid. They must be put in checked baggage.

Avoid the pat down: You have the power to reduce the likelihood you’ll be patted down after going through the body scanner. Take off your jewelry and make sure you have removed all items from your pockets. Don’t wear clothes with a high metal content.

Get in the family lane: Family Lanes allow families to get through checkpoints without feeling rushed by those pesky and sometimes impatient ‘rest of us.’ Children under the age of 12 may now keep their shoes on under most circumstances.

No guns, seriously, no guns: You wouldn’t think TSA had to remind people about this, but the agency says many people forget to take their guns and knives out of carry on bags. So far this year TSA officers have found more than 1,000 guns in passengers’ bags. Many were loaded. Unloaded firearms can be placed in checked baggage.
