Former Shelby County sheriff gets trial date set

AUGLAIZE CO., Ohio —

On Friday, a judge in Auglaize County set a trial date in the sexual battery case that is pending against suspended Shelby County Sheriff Dean Kimpel.

On Sept. 21, Kimpel was arraigned on a charge of sexual battery.

Auglaize County Common Pleas Judge Frederick Pepple set the trial date for May 7, and it is expected to last for four days.

Kimpel's accuser is former deputy Jodi Van Fossen. If convicted, Kimpel could receive the maximum charge of five years in prison and/or a $10,000.

Before the Auglaize County case, Kimpel is scheduled to go on trial in Shelby County Common Pleas Court on five counts of unauthorized use of a law enforcement computer. That trial is set for April 3-5.

Kimpel is currently free on bond and suspended as sheriff with pay.
