Piqua man arraigned following Sidney standoff

SIDNEY —

A man accused of holding officers and SWAT members at bay for several hours on Wednesday morning appeared by video for his arraignment on Thursday morning.

Officers said Sean Fisher, 33, of Piqua, broke into one apartment and then went through the ceiling to get into another apartment. He was charged with five counts of burglary and three counts of attempted kidnapping.

The judge set Fisher's bond at $50,000, and he remains in the Shelby County Jail.

On Wednesday, officers surrounded the Village West Apartments, and after six hours with SWAT members outside, Fisher made a break for it, police said.

Sidney Police Chief Kevin Gessler said, "The individual tried to use a surprise tactic on us. He darted from the door. He tried to run, he tried to elude officers and he was taken into custody immediately."

According to police, at 6 a.m. Wednesday, someone called 911 to say that they saw Fisher break into one of the apartments. Within minutes, officers surrounded the complex.

Fisher then allegedly went into the attic to hide. Police said he tried to punch a hole in the wall, and when he couldn't get out, he went into another apartment.

"He dropped into that apartment, surprised the resident and ran out the front door into the waiting officers that had the area contained," Gessler said.

The Regional SWAT Team was called in and began to negotiate with Fisher.

Officers said they had to evacuate the building and shut down access for people who lived nearby. Police used sirens and bullhorns to negotiate with Fisher.

Police said they will meet with prosecutors to decide how many charges they will file against Fisher.
