Nor’easter warnings prompt coastal evacuations

NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK —

A Nor’easter hitting New York and New Jersey today includes high winds, a lot of rain and heavy snow.

National reports indicate as many as 1,200 flights have been canceled at New York City airports. The storm could slow efforts to restore power to the more than 1 million who are already without it due to last week’s Hurricane Sandy.

Homes are expected to be plunged by water again.

Those in low-lying neighborhoods have been warned to evacuate.

“I am waiting for the locusts and pestilence next,” New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said. “We may take a setback in the next 24 hours.”

According to The Associated Press, police went around with loudspeakers encouraging residents to leave.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg didn’t order new evacuations, however.
