Pedestrian killed in Clark Co. crash ID’d

PIKE TOWNSHIP —

A 78-year-old man was struck and killed while unloading a piece of machinery from a tractor trailer Sunday morning on North Hampton Road in Pike Twp.

The man was identified as Richard Prince, of Conover. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash happened north of Johnson Road shortly before 11 a.m., according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. A 2005 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by a 19-year-old Springfield man, was traveling north on North Hampton when it struck Prince in the roadway.

“The young man driving the pickup was traveling northbound and somehow he came into contact with the man in the road,” said trooper Toby Sebastian of the OSP Springfield Post.

The driver was not injured in the crash and no charges have been issued against him. Speed does not appear to be a factor at this point, according to Sebastian.

Few other details have been made available.

“As far as specifics, no,” Sgt. Bo Schmutz of the highway patrol said when asked for details at the scene. “It remains under investigation.”

Initially, radio dispatch on Sunday reported the crash victim was unresponsive but breathing. Careflight was contacted and put on standby. Moments later, Careflight was canceled and authorities requested that the coroner’s office respond.

Aside from the highway patrol, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office and Pike Twp. fire and rescue crews responded to the scene.
