Woman shot after allegedly stealing from vehicle

DAYTON —

A couple was shot at after trying to steal change and cigarettes from a vehicle, said Dayton police.

Police said the victim and her boyfriend were stealing cigarettes and change out a vehicle on Allen Street in Dayton on Thursday around 10 p.m. The owner of the vehicle saw them and fired a gun with rubber bullets at the boyfriend and girlfriend.

The couple attempted to run away. The shooter got into his vehicle and caught up with the couple. The vehicle owner then got into a fight with the male as he tried to hold the couple for police, said Sgt. Clarence West of Dayton Police.

The female was taken to Miami Valley Hospital with minor injuries, mostly bruising from the rubber bullets, said police.

The couple is being charged with theft from a motor vehicle. The owner of the vehicle is being booked into the Montgomery County Jail on felonious assault pending review of detectives and prosecutors, said West.

Thursday’s shooting occurred in the 400 block of Xenia Avenue less than 32 hours after a shooting in the 1500 block of Xenia that injured two people on Wednesday.
