Springfield police are investigating two stabbing reports that occurred within minutes of each other and in the same general area.

A police report, obtained Monday by the Springfield News Sun, stated officers on Sunday responded at 12:56 a.m. to Springfield Regional Medical Center to speak with a stabbing victim.

The 18-year-old man told police he was walking in the area of Northern Avenue and Olive Street when someone approached him with a knife demanding money. The teenager said he refused, and was stabbed.

He said a friend who lives on East Cassily Street gave him a ride to the hospital. The report states the 18-year-old was stabbed on his back. His injury was not life-threatening.

A separate police report also obtained on Monday states that at about the same time, police were dispatched to the 600 block of E. Cecil Street to speak with the victim of an attempted robbery. That person, who was 21 years old, said he stabbed his attacker in order to get away.

He said he was walking on East Cecil Street when a silver SUV pulled up beside him and a male emerged asking for money. He soon attacked, according to the robbery victim, who told police he pulled a knife from his belt and stabbed the man in his side.

Running away, the victim said two other men exited the SUV and believed one may have had a gun. The victim ran to his residence and called police.

No charges have been filed against the 21-year-old man.

Police will continue to investigate.

“We’re looking into both to see if they’re connected and we haven’t made that determination yet,” said Lt. Noel Lopez.
