SHELBY COUNTY, Ohio —
Firefighters are investigating a fire that destroyed a vacant home between Fort Loramie and Sidney around 9:15 p.m. Thursday.
"The neighbors saw the flames through the woods, came down here and at that point the fire was pretty heavily involved," said Brad Schulze, Fire Chief with the Fort Loramie Fire Department.
The 2-alarm fire required eight different fire departments to respond to the scene on Cecil Wolke Road between Route 47 and Cardo Roman Road.
One neighbor, Craig Anderson, said the fire reminded him of his uncle, who lost his home in a fire. Anderson, who lives five houses down from the burnt home, saw the flames through a wooded area and he ran down to make sure no one was inside.
"You could feel the heat," Anderson said. "By the time the fire department got here it was three-quarters engulfed."
Schulze estimated the damage to be between $80,000 and $100,000, but cautioned that he could only guess at the dollar amount until he spoke with the home owner. He did add however that the house is considered a total loss.
The house was listed for sale and a realtor showed it two or three days ago, Schulze said.
According to Realtytrac.com, the home is 1,560 square feet, has three bedrooms and two baths and is being offered for $134,000. The house has been listed since June 10, 2011.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
