MORAINE, Ohio —

Police in Riverside have released cruiser cam video of a pursuit that ended when a pickup truck crashed head-on into a Riverside police cruiser.

According to police, a traffic stop turned into a police pursuit that stretched across different cities Friday night.

The chase, which reached speeds of 50 mph as it wound through residential streets in Riverside, Kettering and Moraine, ended in a collision involving a Riverside police cruiser.

The veteran officer in that vehicle, whose name has not been released, was transported to a hospital with minor injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.

Police said the chase started in the area of Santa Cruz and Linden avenues when a Riverside officer attempted to pull over a Dodge Ram driven by 20-year-old Benjamin Baker for a minor traffic violation.

Baker refused to pull over, turned off his headlights and sped away, according to Moraine Sgt. Mike Keegan.

Riverside Police Chief Mark Reiss said the officer initially did not follow Baker, according to department policy.

He said the officer had turned his cruiser around and alerted dispatchers that the vehicle had fled, but Baker drove back and attempted to strike the officer’s cruiser.

“At that point… he’s made an effort to intentionally, unprovoked, ram a police officer,” Reiss said.

He said the decision was then made to pursue the vehicle. “They made, in my opinion, the appropriate decision,” Reiss said.

Police chased the truck through Kettering to a business parking lot near the intersection of Dorothy Lane and Springboro Pike.

Keegan said Baker’s truck had lost a tire and stopped, but then he accelerated again and rammed the Riverside cruiser at about 11:30 p.m.

“The officer was stationary and the suspect intentionally drove into the officer,” Reiss said.

Baker suffered minor injuries. He was treated at a hospital before being booked into jail.

He is facing possible charges of felonious assault, resisting arrest and operating a vehicle while intoxicated. His bond has been set at $4,500, according to jail records.

During the chase, Keegan said Baker attempted to crash into at least three other police vehicles, including two Kettering cruisers and another from Riverside.
