DAYTON —

A man police identified as a known gang member was arrested Thursday afternoon for being a felon in possession of weapons.

Shawn Parker, 38, is on parole after serving 10 years in prison for aggravated burglary and complicity to commit felonious assault.

A parole officer was doing a house check Thursday afternoon and Parker let him in, but told him not to go in the bedroom because his girlfriend was asleep. When a female parole officer went into the bedroom there was no one there, just a loaded 12-gauge shotgun propped against the wall.

According to a Dayton Police incident report, Parker admitted that someone gave him the shotgun and he kept it in the bedroom for personal protection.

Officers searched the rest of the house and found a loaded TEC-22 semi-automatic handgun with a detachable magazine under a couch cushion where Parker had been sitting, according to the report.

Parker claimed to know nothing about that gun even though he said he had been asleep on the couch when officers arrived.

Parker is a known member of the Gangster Disciples gang, according to the report. His prior convictions stemmed from a 2000 home invasion in which he pointed a gun at a man, but ended up getting shot in the leg by his accomplice during a scuffle.
