DAYTON —

A 58-year-old man was taken to a hospital Friday evening after he entered the Great Miami River by walking in at the low dam near the West Monument Avenue bridge in what police said was an apparent suicide attempt.

A Dayton Fire Department river rescue crew, dispatched to the area sometime between 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. after receiving a 911 call from local fishermen in the area, recovered the victim.

The man had a pulse at the time rescue crews took him away, Dayton police Lt. Kenneth Beall said. The condition of the man was not immediately available.

Beall said rescue crews arrived quickly but no one was sure how long the man had been in the under tow of the water near the low dam.
