KETTERING —

Frigid temperatures caused at least two water mains to crack in Kettering affecting two major roads.

The first break on Tuesday evening closed parts of Wilmington Pike and East Stroop Road. It left about 100 customers without water early Wednesday morning.

The second break was on Wednesday evening about 50 yards from the first. It reportedly sent water gushing across Wilmington Pike. It was unclear how many customers were affected.

Early Wednesday, Brianna Wooten, communications coordinator for Montgomery County Environmental Services, said a 10-inch line froze and broke overnight sending water onto Wilmington Pike between East Stroop Road and Roslyn Avenue.

That part of Wilmington and part of Stroop were closed until midday as city crews patched the break and then performed several other road repairs.

About 100 customers — including eight businesses and two apartment buildings — were affected by that break and went without water Tuesday night.

Kettering Police said the closure was necessary as they were concerned about water on the road freezing. Salt trucks were called to treat the wet roadway.

Air temperatures in the area dropped to the lower single digits Tuesday night, with an official low at Dayton International Airport of 9 degrees.

Frozen pipes also caused a water main break in Clark County Wednesday morning that led to the closure of Northwestern Local Schools and a boil advisory for the Village of Lawrenceville.

High temperatures today will be in the upper 20s with a few snow flurries expected, according to Jamie Simpson, WHIO-TV chief meteorologist. Friday brings the return of some sun, but it will still be cold, starting again in the teens and with afternoon temperatures only in the mid 20s. It will also still be windy Friday morning, causing wind chills in the lower single digits.
