PREBLE COUNTY —
U.S. 35 in Preble County has reopened after a semi-tractor trailer jackknifed and shut down the road for several hours.
The driver, who was uninjured, told sheriff’s deputies he hydroplaned shortly before 10 a.m. and ripped through a guard rail before coming to a rest along the road. The Environmental Protection Agency was alerted and the Emergency Management Agency responded to the crash because officials at the scene initially said the truck leaked 60 to 70 gallons of diesel fuel into a drainage ditch.
The EPA confirmed later in the day that approximately 40 gallons had been released into the ditch, and a small amount got into a nearby creek. There was no threat to fish or aquatic life, according to an EPA spokesperson.
Westbound U.S. 35 was closed at Oxford Gettysburg Road and Crawfordsville Campbellstown Road while crews worked to clean up the crash. People near the crash site reported seeing the truck go through yards before coming to a stop.
Deputies at the scene said the driver would be cited.
