Officials: Student brings non-functioning gun to school

URBANA —

An Urbana High School student was removed from school today after he admitted to bringing a BB gun to school.

Parents received notification shortly after 12:30 p.m. that a student had brought the weapon to school, according to superintendent Charles Thiel. The school was never on lock down, and the incident was handled quickly, he said.

Thiel said another student notified school administrators that another student had a gun, and the student was removed from class, questioned and soon admitted to having the gun. Thiel was unaware if the gun was on the student or in a locker.

The gun was not functioning, he said.

The student’s intentions are unknown, although Thiel said he did make a statement that he couldn’t trust anyone at the school.

Police were notified of the situation, who removed the student from the school.

The student, who has not been identified, faces school disciplinary, and possibly criminal charges, Thiel said.
