Police: Injured teen may have been drinking

Staff Report

RIVERSIDE, Ohio —

A car slammed into a tree Thursday morning, and now police believe that the teen driver may have been drinking at the time of the crash.

Police in Riverside said a 17-year-old boy was behind the wheel of the car involved in the crash that closed the road for more than an hour.

The teen was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where he was taken into surgery for injuries that appeared to be worse than originally thought.

The crash woke Robert Webb out of bed when the crash happened in the 600 block of Beatrice Drive around 5:15 a.m.

“My wife woke me up after my dog woke her up,” Webb said.

The impact of the crash caused the airbags to deploy inside the car. Neighbors rushed to the scene, helping to get the driver of the vehicle.

Tracy Royalty said, “I don’t know if they got hurt or not, but it looks like somebody got hurt because I know the ambulance came by too.”

Police said they believe that the person behind the wheel was a 17-year-old bo.

Deputy Chief Michael Brown said, “There were some injuries to the individual. He was removed to the hospital and I just got an update that apparently he does have some internal organ injuries and they are taking him to surgery. There was a small odor of alcohol, so obviously we will be doing an OVI test.”

Officers are still investigating to determine what caused the crash. They said they also want to get the alcohol level of the driver.
