OVI arrests made during OSP saturation patrol

Staff Report

MIAMI VALLEY —

The Ohio State Highway Patrol, along with other police agencies, have increased patrols across the Miami Valley over the past two days and made approximately 50 OVI arrests, troopers said.

Troopers conducted two OVI checkpoints in the area the past two evenings. Monday night troopers held a checkpoint in Vandalia. Late Tuesday troopers were on Dorothy Lane near the Greene Towne Center for an additional checkpoint.

During Tuesday night’s checkpoint, troopers checked 810 vehicles. Of the 810 vehicles, 11 people had been drinking and one arrest was made, troopers said.

“We got to spread the message that it’s important to drive sober and to plan ahead,” said Trooper Christopher Ellison.

Troopers from across the entire OSP district, which includes posts in Marysville, Piqua, Wapakoneta, Dayton and Springfield, have been in the area during the 48-hour period, Ellison said.

There has been an abnormally large amount of DUI arrests for two days during the week, especially when it’s not a holiday, Ellison said.

A crash outside of a Needmore Road bar may have had alcohol play a role. Troopers are investigating whether alcohol use caused a crash, where a vehicle ended up smashed into a tree. Ellison said the driver of the vehicle had been doing burnouts outside the bar when he lost control, drove across the road and into the tree.

The driver was not wearing a seat belt and his head hit the windshield. He was transported to Miami Valley Hospital, but is expected to be okay.

Additional troopers will be out for the remainder of today, Ellison said.
