DAYTON —

A man was arrested Tuesday after throwing a handgun into a treeline as he was running from police.

Shortly before noon Tuesday, police initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle for tinted windows, according to authorities. The driver turned into an apartment complex on West Cornell Woods Drive. The driver, identified as Tommie Lee Wilkerson, 23, then took off running, and as he was fleeing from police, he threw a gun, authorities said.

Police called for backup, and Wilkerson was apprehended.

Wilkerson was taken to Grandview Hospital for prior injuries, then transported to jail.

He was arrested on charges of tampering with evidence, resisting arrest and carrying a concealed weapon.
