Shots fired outside girls’ basketball game in Xenia

XENIA —

A disturbance at a girls’ basketball game between Xenia and Trotwood-Madison high schools led to gunfire in the parking lot of Xenia High School on Wednesday night, according to the Xenia Police Department.

No one was injured.

“Last evening at the high school, a disturbance occurred inside the building during the game and spilled out into the parking lot,” Xenia Sgt. Steve Lane said Thursday. “In the parking lot, shots were fired. No one was hit and our indication was that they weren’t trying to hit anyone; that the shots were likely fired into the air.”

Lane said police have identified a suspect, but no arrests have been made and no charges have been filed.

The parties involved were not believed to be from Xenia, according to police.

A one-call alert went out to Xenia parents Thursday morning, noting the incident. Mark Manley, district spokesman, confirmed Thursday afternoon that no Xenia students were involved in the altercation or were injured.

Police said they could not confirm whether the suspect or those in the crowd were minors.

Lane said the Xenia Police Department often staffs boys’ basketball games, but not as many girls’ games, and the police were not in attendance Wednesday night.

“It’s probably based on attendance being higher at boys’ games,” he said.

The disturbance did not disrupt the game, which Xenia won, 50-34.
